On the Importance of Infection Prevention

Site infections are an ever-present worry for medical professionals, administrators and patients. In the healthcare industry, there is little margin for error. Patients depend on medical staff to take every single precaution to protect them from the moment they enter the facility to the moment they leave it.

A recent article in the American Journal of Infection Control titled “Using medical student observers of infection prevention, hand hygiene, and injection safety in outpatient settings: A cross-sectional survey,” highlighted the importance of sound preventative practices. The study found that both self-report and behavior observation should be performed together to properly evaluate infection prevention in a facility.

This really isn’t a surprise. Both methods of evaluation serve not only to encourage medical staff to engage in the proper practices but also monitors discrepancies between actual behavior and reported behavior. Healthcare professionals are less likely to engage in best practices if they don’t feel that they will be held accountable; this is true across industries but of specific importance inside of inpatient or outpatient facilities.

The aforementioned study also found that encouraging proper hygiene was effective when proposed by peers rather than facilities themselves. Medical students, in particular, had positive benefits when identifying improvement opportunities and sharing them amongst themselves.

Medical students, in general, are more likely to learn in medical facilities. Their status as learners in a group allows for a more positive influence on ideas shared. Students should be encouraged to work together, sharing the knowledge they’ve acquired in their own experiences or from senior professionals with one another.

Overall, the study served to find the best ways to influence future medical professionals in ways that improve the quality of infection prevention in healthcare facilities, an important undertaking given the renewed focus the industry has taken in recent years.
